There's no single price for a lawn, because no two lawns are the same. The cost depends on the size of the lawn, its current condition, how often you want it visited, and whether it needs treatment work as well as mowing. Through the main growing season, from roughly April to September, most lawns do best on a weekly cut, or fortnightly if you're happy with a slightly longer sward. Growth slows in spring and autumn, so visits can drop back, and in a mild winter a lawn may still need the occasional light top. The general rule is never to take off more than a third of the leaf in one cut — scalping a lawn stresses the grass and lets moss and weeds in.

Autumn is the main window for scarifying, usually September or October, when the ground is still warm enough for the grass to recover but growth has slowed. Spring scarifying is possible on a lawn in good health. Aeration can be done in spring or autumn and is most useful on heavy clay or ground that's been walked on hard. Both look drastic for a fortnight afterwards — that's normal, and the lawn comes back thicker for it.

It depends on the garden and how you use it. Real turf is cooler underfoot, better for wildlife and drainage, and can be repaired in patches — but it needs mowing, feeding and time. Artificial grass stays green in deep shade and heavy traffic where real grass struggles, and needs very little upkeep, but it costs more to install, gets hot in direct summer sun, and has a finite lifespan before replacement. Newly laid turf usually roots into the soil within two to three weeks in decent growing conditions, and should be kept off foot traffic during that time. It'll take a full growing season to knit together properly and behave like an established lawn. Watering is the thing that makes or breaks it — new turf needs a lot of water in the first few weeks, especially if it goes down in summer. We'll leave you clear aftercare instructions.

Moss is a symptom, not the problem. It moves in where grass is struggling, and the usual causes are shade, poor drainage, compacted soil, low fertility, or mowing too short. Killing the moss without fixing the cause just means it returns the following year. We look at the underlying conditions first, then treat and remove the moss and address whatever let it in — usually a combination of scarifying, aeration, feeding and adjusting the cutting height.

A typical year runs to four visits. Spring brings a nitrogen-rich feed to green the lawn up and start growth. Early summer combines feed with selective weed control. Late summer or early autumn is the window for scarifying, aeration and overseeding where needed. The autumn or winter visit uses a low-nitrogen feed with moss control to harden the grass off for the cold months. We'll adjust the shape of that to your lawn rather than apply the same card to every garden.
